AI Traffic Attribution (GA4 + GSC)
Connect Google Analytics 4 and Search Console to map AI visibility to sessions, queries, and conversions.
PingAura connects Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console (GSC) to measure impact. It compares mentions and citations with website sessions and search query trends to see whether presence in model answers correlates with increases in visits. This is modeled correlation, not direct tracking. Since AI tools don't always send referral data, PingAura aligns citation timing with landing page sessions and query growth to estimate influence over time.
Before you begin
- You have GA4 Admin access and GSC Owner access.
- Have your canonical domain ready (preferred HTTPS + host).
Core setup
You can connect either source, but attribution insights are most complete when both GA4 and GSC are connected. For deeper analytics, Cloudflare is preferred to capture crawlers and bot visits at the edge.
Attribution Metrics
- Model-driven sessions: Estimated website visits that likely came from AI-answer presence. These are modeled by matching prompts and citation signals with session patterns — not direct referral tracking. Prompts are the questions your team sets up in PingAura to monitor across models.
- Landing pages: The specific pages on your site that show session increases alongside mentions.
- Query clusters: The grouped themes and intents that correlate with visibility changes.
- Conversion lift: Optional mapping to GA4 conversion events so you can measure downstream impact on business leads (leads, purchases, etc.).
Connect GA4 and GSC in PingAura
- Go to Connections in PingAura.
- Make sure you have GA4 Admin access and GSC Owner access for the properties you want to connect.
- Authorize Google Analytics 4 and select the property that tracks your primary site.
- Authorize Google Search Console and choose the verified property you set up earlier.
- Map your canonical domain (the preferred HTTPS + host, e.g.
https://example.com) so sessions, citations, and visits align to the same URLs. If you manage multiple domains, map each one.
How to Interpret Results
- A visibility score increase without session lift often means citations in model responses are missing.
- Session lift without citations often indicates answers mention you but do not reference your sources.
- If citations and sessions both rise, prioritize the prompts and pages that drove the change.
Data Latency
- GA4 is typically 24 hours behind.
- GSC typically lags 24-48 hours.
